Berbice lawyer files writ against Kaieteur News – claiming $100M

ATTORNEY-at-law Murseline Bacchus has filed a writ   claiming the sum of one hundred million dollars jointly and severally for defamation falsely and maliciously printed and published by the Kaieteur News concerning him, on page 24 of the Saturday, June 8, 2013 edition under the caption: “Woman seeking $5M compensation from Berbice Lawyer”.

Those listed as defendants are Attorney-at-law Charrandas Persaud of Strand, New Amsterdam; the National Media and Publishing Company Limited of Lot 24 Saffon Street, Charlestown; and Adam Harris and Glen Lall as Editor and   Publisher respectively.
The plaintiff is contending that the Kaieteur News is a daily newspaper circulating in Guyana and New York, and publication of the defamation has resulted in loss and damages being done to the plaintiff.
He is claiming:
(a) Damages in the sum of one hundred million dollars as against the first-named defendant for malicious falsehood, in that the first-named defendant maliciously caused to be published in the said newspaper of the said date false statements of and concerning the plaintiff, resulting in loss and damage to the plaintiff.

(b) An injunction restraining the defendants by themselves, and each of them, their servants or agents, from further publishing the said or any similar article.
The plaintiff is represented by Messrs. Rex Mc Kay S.C, Marcel Crawford S.C, and Dridhnauth Perry Gossai.
