Thousands attend IAC Mela in Essequibo

THE Indian Arrival Committee (IAC) Mela attracted several thousand last Sunday at the Anna Regina Car Park tarmac on Essequibo Coast.

The event, which was jointly organised by the Region 2 (Pomeroon/Supenaam)Administration to mark the 175th year since East Indians first arrived in Guyana, gathered thousands of them together to celebrate the culture of their foreparents in an atmosphere of love, peace and togetherness.
Minister of Natural Resources and the Environment, Mr. Robert Persaud, who addressed the large crowd, said East Indians have many things to be proud of and called on them to unite, so as to move forward.
He declared that the only way to progress is when the nation can be united and said the Government is seeking to build such a country.
The throng was entertained by dance troupes out of Trinidad and Tobago, Georgetown and the Essequibo Coast and there were several booths with Indian clothing and food.
