SEVERAL stallholders and other vendors in the Georgetown Bourda Market are complaining about a recent rat infestation.
They said it has been happening about two weeks now but has become unbearable because customers are seeing the creatures and moving away in disgust.
The sellers are calling on the relevant authorities to look into the matter, pointing out that just spraying would not be enough, as the garbage needs to be removed and the place kept in better condition.
Some are lamenting that thousands of dollars in business is being lost daily because of the pests which are invading and eating into their stocks.
Others, who sell fresh food, reported that the rats go into their glass cases, in broad daylight, too, and feast on their edible merchandise.
The complainants said this is not the first such occurrence but, this time, the situation has gotten out of control.
When contacted, the Market Clerk declined to give her name and said she is not authorised to comment on the issue.
However, the Guyana Chronicle was reliably informed that the Public Health Department is expected to begin spraying exercises this week to rid the market of the pests.
The sellers pointed out, though, that unless the premises are properly cleaned and rid of garbage, the rodents would keep coming back, as they live off refuse.
Some of those complaining are blaming others involved in vending for the problem, stating that the storerooms and stalls of those occupants need to be sanitised on a regular basis.
