CHETESHWAR Pujara’s stunning double-century saw India take a big lead against Australia on day three of the second Test in Hyderabad.
Resuming on 162, Pujara was eventually dismissed for 204 while Murali Vijay (167) also continued to score heavily.
Australian spinners Glenn Maxwell (4-127 off 26 overs) and Xavier Doherty (3-131 off 46.1) had late success as India collapsed from 1-387 to 503 all out.
But the damage had already been done, with India carrying a healthy lead into Australia’s second innings.
Spinner Ravichandran Ashwin (2-42 off 15) then made inroads into Australia’s top order as the tourists finished the day at 2-74, still trailing by 192 runs.
India began the day at 1-311 with Pujara on 162 and Vijay on 129 and the pair quickly took their partnership past 300 runs.
The runs were flowing and although Doherty had an lbw shout against Pujara turned down, the Aussies were rarely threatening with the ball.
Vijay reached his 150 with a clip through mid-on before his innings finally ended when Maxwell claimed his first Test wicket for his country.
The debutant got good turn and bounce from his delivery and Vijay offered a simple catch to Ed Cowan at short leg.
The wicket ended a devastating 370-run partnership, India’s highest-ever for the second wicket and also their fourth-best for any wicket.
Vijay walked off to a standing ovation and the crowd were whipped into a frenzy as cult hero Sachin Tendulkar (seven) strode to the crease.
Pujara – who became the second fastest Indian to reach 1 000 Test runs – brought up his 200 with a four through the leg side off the bowling of Maxwell.
James Pattinson (2-80 off 29) dismissed Pujara in the next over though, as Doherty took a terrific diving catch at fine leg. And Tendulkar departed shortly after when he edged Pattinson to wicketkeeper Matthew Wade.
MS Dhoni looked to rectify things with a quick-fire 44 but was dismissed when he smashed one straight at Doherty, who juggled his effort at mid-off before completing the catch.
Doherty and Maxwell were consistently turning the ball and starting to cause regular problems, with the Victorian adding Ravindra Jadeja (10) to his haul of victims when he too took a catch at the second attempt.
Ashwin (one) gave Doherty his first wicket of the match in the next over when he was caught by Phil Hughes in gully and he added the scalps of Harbhajan Singh (zero) and Bhuvneshwar Kumar (10).
Virat Kohli (34) also made way, becoming Maxwell’s fourth victim, as India were bowled out in the 155th over of their innings.
Doherty’s wickets were well deserved, and although the Tasmanian was not overly threatening for the majority of the innings, he still bowled a good line and length and conceded less than three runs an over.
Australia were forced to face 32 overs before stumps and openers Ed Cowan (26 not out) and David Warner (26) looked initially comfortable.
Their resistance lasted exactly 20 overs though, before Warner was bowled around his legs by Ashwin.
And Hughes (zero) saw his poor tour continue when he inside-edged an attempted sweep onto his stumps soon after.
Cowan faced exactly 100 balls for his runs and was typically defiant, with Shane Watson (nine not out) joining him in the later stages.
But the pair still have plenty of work to do on day four if they want to even think about saving the match for their country. (CA)
