SEVERAL persons were displaced and rendered homeless as a result of three fires over the weekend. The three separate incidents occurred at Unity and Nabaclis, East Coast Demerara and at D’Urban Street, Georgetown.
Chief Fire Officer Marlon Gentle told the Guyana Chronicle that the one which devoured the dwelling house at Lot 19 Unity New Road, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara is believed to have been started by a child, leaving six persons, including three children, without a home and millions of dollars in losses.
The home owner, Shivraj Totaram said that at the time of the blaze, on Sunday, he was out and his wife and three children were in the house.
The businessman was alerted to the outbreak and hurried back only to find the place totally engulfed in flames which quickly consumed the entire edifice.
Gentle said the place was heavily stocked with flammable and other combustible materials, including outdoor plastics and clothing among other things which fuelled the conflagration and, within minutes, the big building was reduced to its concrete frame.
MADE AWARE
The Fire Chief noted that it was some time before the Mahaica Fire Station was made aware of the occurrence but managed to contain the disaster to one building.
The fire at D’Urban and George Streets, in the city was the result of arson, Gentle disclosed.
He said someone tried to break into the premises which is the home of the septuagenarian owner of Libra and Gemini Carpets business.
Gentle said the 79-year-old Chandradai Mangra, who was unaware of what was happening, was rescued from the burning place by firefighters.
He said that fire occurred about 10:57 hrs on Sunday when only the woman and a physically challenged son were at home.
Their losses ran into millions as well but no one was injured in the destruction of a section of the property.
The third fire was set by a drunk occupant of the house where he lives, who is in police custody after his dwelling, at Lot 412 Foulis Housing Scheme, East Coast Demerara was destroyed about 14:00 hrs on Saturday.
The man who torched the place had a quarrel with his wife, who fled from a beating to a neighbour’s house and, subsequently, saw their home alight. (Michel Outridge)
