Works moving apace at specialty hospital site

STOCKPILING of materials, such as sand, has commenced in preparation for construction of Guyana’s first specialty hospital at Turkeyen, which is expected to take specialist medical care to another level.

altHealth Minister, Dr. Bheri Ramsaran, in an interview with the Government Information Agency (GINA), noted that due to favourable weather conditions, work is on stream.
“Further to that, you have a good vision now of the scope of the project, the land is clear and the contractor Bovell was on site and we are hoping that we could work with him to speed up some of the works that need to be done,” the minister indicated.
In relation to some concrete works which seem to be at a standstill, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Leslie Cadogan, will be looking at how the ministry can work better with the contractor to speed up this aspect.
“But not withstanding all of that, the project is alive and well, and we are very hopeful that the actual construction of the building will be changing our skyline on the East Coast of Demerara,” Minister Ramsaran said.
Recently, a team from Surendra Engineering Company Limited visited Guyana and met with PS Cadogan. That was an obligatory meeting by the contractor to start preliminary talks and to review the progress made on the site.
The decision to construct the 250-bed hospital came following a visit to India by former President Bharrat Jagdeo and Minister Ramsarran.
India has, over the years, established itself as one of the pioneers in health care, as many persons from even developed countries such as North America travel to the Asian State through medical tourism because of the competitive nature of such services there.
The US$18M facility is being constructed through an Indian line of credit, and when completed, the hospital will provide services including cardio-related and cosmetic surgeries, and organ transplants. The intention is to provide any surgery that Guyanese would now have to travel overseas for, at a fraction of the cost.(GINA)
