THE Environmental Community Health Organization (ECHO) will begin in ECHO clubs in schools a composting project to raise awareness of the benefits of composting to the environment and communities.
A release from ECHO said the initiative would also provide a forum for children, parents and teachers to work together on an environmental project, to begin to stimulate in ECHO club members a desire to grow a school garden.
Early next week, the National Coordinator for ECHO clubs will visit schools in Regions 3 (Essequibo Islands/West Demerara), 4 (Demerara/Mahaica), and 10 (Upper Demerara/Upper Berbice) to raise awareness and talk to coaches and children about the project.
Moreover, the leaders of ECHO clubs will identify appropriate available space to do composting in schools.
The second stage, which involves providing those involved with information and education on how to do composting, will begin in February.
The final stage is the actual practical work of composting will be done by coaches, parents and ECHO club members.
At the moment, ECHO said, it is engaging interested parties and stakeholders to support the project, to provide the appropriate resources to allow the project to achieve its objectives.
“Composting is usually recommended as an additive to the soil. It helps to provide a rich growing medium for plants. Also, it improves the overall fertility of the soil,” ECHO said.
