I must write to express my thoughts on what I perceive to be a very poorly planned Diwali Motorcade in the East Canje/New Amsterdam/East Bank Berbice area. First of all, the string of vehicles that passed my area minutes before the 9 o’ clock hour could hardly be described as a motorcade; it appeared more of a race to me—a race because they were late!
The public lined the roadways; expectant children, waited anxiously to see these beautifully decorated vehicles that pass only once per year; they waited and
waited and waited, and when they did pass, it was a race against time. There is hardly any time to savour the moment.
Imagine, these intricately designed, well-lit vehicles with persons on them depicting the Hindu Gods and Goddesses, fly pass in seconds. Nobody really gets to enjoy the whole thing.
I believe these events should be better planned. I do not know how it is exactly in other parts of Guyana, but every year it is the same thing in Canje, and the planners need to get their acts together.
Come on! Every year they plan these things! It does not take rocket science for these planners to strategically position these vehicles so that they are distanced from each other, and they drive slower, especially when they pass the heavily populated streets and roads lined with hundreds of people. And they are late every year, hence the race to the Canje Welfare ground.
