RESIDENTS of Lima, Region Two, are breathing a sigh of relief as work to repair the deplorable road in their community has started.

During several government meetings, the residents had pleaded for the road to be repaired. They had complained about the countless potholes on the roadway which is used to access the popular Mainstay Resort.

During Vice-President Bharrat Jagdeo’s recent visit to the region, former Toshao of Mainstay, Joel Fredericks, raised the issue once again.

He said that numerous representations were made for the road to be repaired but nothing was done. Fredericks also mentioned that the Mainstay Road was previously repaired under Jagdeo’s presidency. The toshao requested that Lima Road be included in the list of projects to be undertaken in the region

Jagdeo, after listening to the complaint, promised Fredericks that he will immediately look into the matter.

Subsequently, work commenced on the $180 million road project. The road currently has asphalt and is in its first phase.

According to Region Two Vice-Chairman, Humace Oodit, the regional administration will be monitoring the project. He said that the region is happy to deliver another promise to the people of Essequibo.

He said the road is approximately 6 metres wide and 800 metres long.

Residents are thankful since the road also gives them access to Tapakuma.

“We are happy about this, the area is far and many times when we ask vehicles to give us a drop they don’t want to due to the road condition and as such we are happy for it,” Jagat Narine, a resident of Mc Nabb said.

Rosaline Thompson, a councillor attached to the Anna Regina Town Council said she was particularly happy about the road repairs. Thompson who resides in Lima Sands said every day persons from the community would call her with a complaint about the state of the thoroughfare.

“I am glad the road is getting fixed. Farmers also use the road to access their farmlands. I am happy for this, for my community,” she added.

The residents also praised Jagdeo for promptly addressing their concerns.
