GPF Track & Field Championships… HEADQUARTERS COMFORTABLY AHEAD AFTER DAY ONE

DEFENDING Champions Headquarters (HQ) has established a lead of 36 points ahead of their closest competitor in this year’s Guyana Police Force (GPF) Track and Field Championships which is being staged at the Eve Leary Sport Complex Ground.
At the conclusion of day one HQ accumulated 94 points for the nine B Class finals that were contested. Trailing in second was A Division with 58 points, B Division was third with 36 points and the Country Vision was fourth with 19 points.
In the International Points/A Class standing, the home team, Guyana, once again with maximum athletes leads with 68 points ahead of Trinidad and Tobago with 32 points and Antigua third with 14 points.
The day got underway with the male and female road races then moved on to the heats of the Men’s and Women’s A and B Class 100m and 400m. Wrapping up the day was the Men’s A Class 800m finals and Women’s 3000m.
Rain intervened for a while under half an hour but it was not enough to take away from the sports. Keen competition was not the order of the day with some scant competitors taking to the heats.
A Division’s Cindy Fraser won the Women’s Long Jump finals with an attempt of 5.21m ahead of HQ’s T. Moses and T. Burgers who jumped 4.98m and 4.97m, respectively.
The Long Jump Men’s B Class was won by HQ’s J. Williams (6.56m) ahead of D. Nicholson of A Division and T. Benn of Country Division.
Another highlight of the field events was the Discus Men B’ Class which was won by HQ’s J. Benjamin and he was followed by K. Mendonca (B Div.) and C. Green (HQ)
In the Men’s A Class 800m, Guyana’s Trevor Scotland finished comfortably ahead of his Trinidadian and Antiguan counterparts.
Today the games continue with another 10:00 hrs start.
