FARMERS involved in cash crop farming in the Bath/Naarstighed area of Region Five (Mahaica/Berbice) were among those who expressed satisfaction with the outcome of their participation in the Government Outreach at Fort Wellington, West Coast Berbice on Thursday.

Mr. Peter De La Cruz represented the farmers who would like to obtain land owned by GUYSUCO in this area and met with the Minister of Agriculture, Noel Holder, and Estate Manager of GUYSUCO, Mr. Hutton Griffith, and was assured of support from GUYSUCO with respect to lands not in use by the corporation there.

Following the meeting, De La Cruz said he was happy to be given the opportunity to present his case for the members of his group. He was also happy that the matter is going to be dealt with to assist his members to be able to access the land and to be productive. He said: “This ‘government comes to you’ outreach was a really wonderful idea. I was able to get my case over and was able to get assurances of support on the spot.”

He said that he is certain that the matter will be soon resolved so that the farmers can get into production with the requisite security of tenure. Mr. Hutton Griffith, Estate Manager at Blairmont Estate, told the Guyana Chronicle that the main issue raised as it relates to GUYSUCO in Region Five had to do with farmers wanting to access lands not in use by the corporation. He disclosed that these requests were relatively few and as such, would be dealt with in an expeditious manner.
