TOSHAO of Mainstay/Whyaka on the Essequibo Coast, Ms. Yvonne Pearson has called on Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy and Minister within the Ministry, Mr. Alli Baksh to put more focus on other crops, especially organic farming. She said her community has the only certified organic farmers in Guyana that cultivate pineapples on a large scale and she wants that type of cultivation to be promoted not in Mainstay alone but across the country.
Pearson pointed out that coffee, too, is grown organically at Wakapoa in Lower Pomeroon.
According to her, there is a vast acreage of fertile, virgin lands available in Region 2 (Pomeroon/Supenaam) for the promotion of organic farming and she will be working very closely with the Ministry of Agriculture to pursue the growing of such crops.
Agriculture Minister Ramsammy has already promised that organic farming and products will be developed so that Guyana can be a brand name for them on the international market. (Prabhulall)
