Ramotar extols Guyana international recognition under PPP administrationn
THE outpouring of support that the People’s Progressive Party (PPP/C) has received from Linden and the rest of the country, during its elections campaign, has been tremendous and shows that citizens recognise and are satisfied with its efforts to improve the quality of their lives. Presidential Candidate, for the November 28 polls, Mr. Donald Ramotar made this pronouncement in Linden, where he and Prime Minister Samuel Hinds met with scores of residents in the mining town, during a walkabout on Wednesday.
According to Ramotar, the PPP/C, from the beginning, has always stood by the side of the poor and working class and has been laying the foundation for better quality of life for all citizens, through access to education, health, housing, water and other social necessities.
And, as such, citizens are now rallying around the party, he said.
Ramotar explained: “I see it more as a love for the party than the outpouring of affection and support for me. I recognise that most of it is in recognition of the PPP/C and all of these things we have been able to do for the periods that we have been in office, which has transformed the face of Guyana, not only Region Ten, but all Guyana.”
He said, in addition, Guyana has also gained international acclaim for several of the programmes and policies being implemented under the current administration.
Alluding to this, Ramotar said: “The progress being made within Guyana is also reflected in the different attitudes to the country abroad. President Jagdeo has been named Champion of the Earth. The international community is beginning to respect what we stand for, our position. We are now one of the leading advocates as far as environmental protection is concerned and many countries want to learn from our experience.”
More recently, the Minister of Agriculture from the Democratic Republic of Congo came to look at Guyana’s Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) and Suriname is also showing interest in the model, the Presidential Candidate informed.
He pointed out, too, that Guyana is now holding more prestigious positions on the international arena, formerly holding the position of the Pro Tempore Chairmanship of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR), which was handed over to Paraguay at the fifth meeting of the Council of Heads of State and Government of that grouping, in Asuncion, that country’s capital, last October 29.
“We also have a leading position in CARICOM and we are highly respected at the United Nations. At the last Heads of Government meeting, the Prime Minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines pointed out that Guyana is the only bright spot in the Caribbean at this time,” Ramotar asserted.
He observed that there is a major change in how people see Guyana and the respect they have for the country’s position, as a result of the PPP/C’s advocacy internationally.
Ramotar stated: “The PPP/C was always a party for all the people of Guyana, working with all the people of Guyana but we have always been supporting things on the international arena and we have finally put behind us our image as Jonestown.”
