CARLOS Adams and Harry Panday were victorious in the Men’s Over-45 doubles category last Thursday evening to become the first winners at this year’s Guyana Lawn Tennis Association (GTA)-organised, GBTI-sponsored Open tennis tournament.
They defeated the team of Maxie Fox/Sakae Yamada in the final, winning in straight sets 6-3, 6-3, as they proved to be too good a combination against the wily Fox and the hardworking Yamada, posting their victory by playing some excellent doubles tennis.
Adams is also in the Men’s Over 45 Singles final which will be played on Monday. He will face Rudy Grant, who will be looking for revenge, after Adams easily defeated him in the Men’s 35 Singles action.
Highlighting this weekend’s action are the matchups in the Men’s Singles in the semifinals stage.
Number two seed Ezra Sue-Ho will face the overseas-based college player Antony Downes tomorrow from 18:00hrs, with Downes starting as the favourite, having defeated the former number one player Phillip Squires in his quarter-finals match, but it will be interesting to see how Sue-Ho fares in his showdown

The Boys’ Under-18 final will be played this evening where top seeds and arch rivals Gavin Lewis and Daniel Lopes will face each other for the title in a match which follows a showdown in the Men’s Doubles Category between the two top doubles team in Phillip Squires and Godfrey Lowden who will be taking on Anthony Downes and Leyland Leacock.
Also scheduled for tonight is the Ladies’ Doubles final which will have the mother and daughter pairing of Shelly and Nicola Ramdyhan taking on Aruna Ramrattan and Shawna Gentle for the title, while top seed Andre Lopes and Steve David will do battle in a Men’s Over-35 Single semifinals action.
