MIGRATION, amendments to legislation and wages took centre-stage as President Bharrat Jagdeo met trade unionists at State House Thursday. The talks are held once every quarter, and follow a pact between President Bharrat Jagdeo and the Federation of Independent Trade Unions of Guyana (FITUG).
At the meeting were trade union representatives from FITUG, the National Association of Agricultural, Commercial and Industrial Employees (NAACIE), the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers’ Union (GAWU) and the Guyana Labour Union (GLU). Minister within the Ministry of Health, Dr Bheri Ramsaran, was also present.
FITUG’s President, Carvil Duncan described the meeting as excellent, as it brought to the spotlight several issues that trade unionists have been confronting.
He pointed to the lobby for The Termination of the Employment and Severance Pay Act, which unionists believe lack certain provisions that are necessary.
“We looked at areas in the law that needs to be amended for the benefit of the workers and at the same time maintain the relationship and the commitment that we meet every quarter,” Duncan told the Government Information Agency (GINA).
