Taxi driver remanded after Friday night shooting incidents

POLICE investigating a gun robbery on D’Urban Street, Georgetown, last week Friday night, have charged a taxi driver with unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.
Michael Khan, 20, of Lot 24 Second Street, Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara, appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday and was remanded to prison.

He pleaded not guilty to charges that said, on April 1, he had in his possession two pistols (a.40 mm and a 9 mm) as well as 15 live rounds without licences for them.
Police Corporal Venetta Pindar, prosecuting, said the defendant was held at a roadblock after the D’Urban Street incident was reported and the guns and bullets were found behind the driver’s seat.
After the prosecutor said other occupants were in the car, the magistrate enquired why they were not charged, too.
In response, the prosecutor said, when the police stopped the vehicle, the others who were inside fired shots at the ranks and made good their escape.
Khan will have to make his next appearance at Sparendaam Court, also on the East Coast Demerara, to where his case has been transferred, for April 8.
