Ravens beat Pacesetters to take $100,000 and GABA Pepsi Street Series playoffs

RAVENS basketball club has tighten its superiority on basketball in Georgetown and especially over their arch rivals Courts Pacesetters, after taking game three of the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) Pepsi Street Series first Division basketball finals on Sunday evening at the Burnham Basketball Court.

Known as one of the oldest existing basketball club in Guyana, Ravens emphatically thumped the Courts sponsored Pacesetters by 20 points (74-54) in front of a highly appreciative crowd at the outdoor venue.

It took an all round team effort from the champs to slay their foes with guards Rodwell Fortune pouring in a game high 14 points and Ryan Stephaney 13.

Stephan Henry and Ryan Gullen both dropping 12 points were the other two primary scorers for the Ravens while Travis Burnett scored 13, Naylon Loncke 10 and centre Royston Siland nine were the highest scorers for Pacesetters.

When the game started, fans at the venue thought they would have gotten a closely contested affair as was the case in the first two games of the best-of-three formatted finals, based on the scores at the end the first quarter where Pacesetters held a two points lead over the eventual winners –  16 – 14.

While the battle was close and fierce, midway through the second period, Ravens begun to take flight primarily through the scoring of their diminutive point guard Fortune and the expertise of their player/coach Darcel Harris.

Coach Bobby Cadogon found it difficult to control him (Fortune) and when he did, the other Ravens stepped up and handed their side a slim lead heading into the second half.

Down 32-37 at the beginning of the third quarter, Pacesetters came out firing on all cylinders and outscored the Ravens 19 – 12 to lead 51- 49 at the close of the penultimate quarter.

But what would unfold in the final period cause some of their (Pacesetters) supporters to make an early prediction that “it was all over”.

Ravens capitalised on Pacesetters’ weak and flimsy defence and did well in turning them over to some quick break baskets and with $100,000 at stakes the taste of victory got sweeter and the enthusiasm boomed restricting Pacesetters to  score only three points in the fourth.

Loud cheers came from the Ravens bench while the body language of the Pacesetters players both on the court and the bench loudly spelt “we surrender”.

Ravens would willingly drive to basket sometimes will little or no challenge and noticing that, fans calmly exited the venue and when the final whistle was sounded, it was celebration for the ravens who would once again clinch a double after picking up the third Division title the night before.
