THE Guyana Energy Authority last evening issued a statement warning fuel dealers to desist from purchasing illegal fuel following the theft of domestic marker concentrate used to mark fuel.
Last Thursday last week four masked persons had entered the GEA compound and made off with some of the marker concentrate. “The Guyana Police Force has been diligently conducting investigations with the assistance of the GEA and public-spirited citizens; GEA is encouraged by the numerous calls received from the public and is grateful for the information being provided,” the GEA said in its statement.
“The GEA wishes to advise that the composition of the marker concentrate has since been modified to detect the unauthorized use of the stolen marker concentrate.
“All fuel dealers, vendors and operators are warned to desist from purchasing illegal fuel. Persons are reminded that indulging in activities involving improperly marked fuel will result in a fine of $3,000,000 and imprisonment of three years. Anyone found in possession of marker or fuel marked with the stolen marker will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
“Persons are asked to continue reporting any suspicious activities relating to illegal fuel to the GEA Secretariat on 226-0394 or 624-5905,” the statement concluded.
