card set for November 8 at Princes Hotel and Casino
WORLD Champion Shondel Alfred, top rated Leon Moore and overseas based Guyanese Raul Frank will headline ‘Caribbean Fury 2’ boxing card which is set for the Princes Hotel and Casino on November 8.
Lion Love Entertainment of New York, Holland’s Entertainment and Hurry-Up Promotions are promoters of the card which is promised to be “a night of boxing to forever remember”.
The event was launched yesterday in the conference room of the Princes Hotel which is playing host to its second boxing card and is well on its way to becoming Guyana’s premier venue for international boxing.
According to Carwyn Holland, of Holland’s Entertainment, who was the brainchild of the first Caribbean Fury that saw ‘The Mystery Lady’ Alfred claiming her first world title with a win over Corrine De Groot, the second installation of the event will be nothing short of the first and predicts to be even more exciting.
Moore will face Venezuelan Breilor Teran over 10 rounds; Alfred is down to face Olga Julio of Colombia while Frank is down to face the self professed giant slayer Kwesi Jones.
The other bout on the card features local heavyweight champion Mitchell Rogers who will face Theophelous King, former amateur standout Clive Atwell, now based in Dominica will challenge Errol Trotman and the journeyman Mark Murray is set to do battle with Richard Reittie.
At age 31, Moore is one of the English Speaking Caribbean highest rated fighters, being ranked number five by the World Boxing Council (WBC), seventh by the World Boxing Association (WBA) and 15th by the World Boxing Organisation (WBO).
The Guyanese is the holder of the WBC Caribbean Boxing Federation (CABOFE) and Central American super bantamweight titles, the North American Boxing Association (NABA) bantamweight title, along with the WBA Pan Asian Boxing Association super bantamweight title.
His ring record stands at 26 wins from 28 fights with two loses and with his latest victory being eight months ago over Marangin Marbun in Singapore.
Moore’s opponent, has 21 professional fights over his seven year career with his ring record standing at 12 wins, four of which came via the knock-out route but he also has eight loses and one draw.
The 25- year- old Teran last fight was on July 9th in Mexico, where he suffered a 12 round unanimous decision lost to Giovanni Caro for the WBC FECARBOX super bantamweight title.
Speaking at yesterday’s press conference, Moore said that being out of the ring for a while did a lot for him and said while he knows little or nothing about his challenger, he’s not worried.
“After I came back from the fight in Singapore, I had a problem with my thumb, I was troubling with plenty pain and so on, but I did some work on it, I went to the U.S. and I was training all the time as normal and now I can hit even harder back with the hand, so I’m not worried at all, Leon Moore will do well” the always smiling Moore stated.
Meanwhile for Alfred who is riding high after her superb TKO win over De Groot in their rematch is anxious to step back into the ring since she noted that she’s always hungry for a challenge and a good fight.
She will face her Colombian counterpart over eight rounds and seemed laid back in stating that “I don’t know nothing about her and its not a big deal, I’m a warrior, I’m a fighter and I’m always prepared to fight. This is boxing and it’s my job, so I’m glad for the fight and I’m looking forward to the clash.
Julio, 24, has won eight of her 17 fights, while conceding eight loses and a draw. She last fought Omaira Suarez in Colombia where she picked up a fifth round knockout victory.
But while a lot was said about Moore and Alfred, much attention is going towards the Frank/Jones clash.
Jones, on September 24, defeated Guyana’s Middleweight Champion Howard ‘The Battersea Bomber’ Eastman by Unanimous Decision and yesterday he said “I told Eastman, I’m on my way to the top and he was in my way, and so is Raul Frank, so I will put him out the way as well.”
Jones added that, “I’m on my way to become one of the best middleweight fighters in Guyana and Kwesi Jones is not afraid of anyone, I’m a fighter and I know what I have to do to win, so look out, I told ya’ll I mean business”
