Defendant in Tuesday airport drug bust remanded

LOUIS Vandecruize, whose local address is Lot 109 West Ruimveldt, Georgetown, appeared before Magistrate Hazel Octave-Hamilton yesterday, charged with drug trafficking.

He pleaded not guilty to being in possession of one kilogramme 136 grammes of cocaine for the purpose, on March 31, at Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), Timehri, East Bank Demerara.

Police Inspector Desiree Fowler, prosecuting, said the narcotic was found on the defendant’s person and he was remanded to prison until tomorrow.

The Prosecutor said the bust took place about 07:50 h on Tuesday, when ranks of the Police Narcotics Branch discovered four packets of the prohibited substance strapped to the body of Vandecruize, a Guyanese resident in Canada.

He was an outgoing passenger on a flight bound for New York when a search at the security checkpoint yielded the find, Fowler said.
