QUARTER-final action in the Annual Mayor’s Cup football tournament has been shifted to the Victoria ground, East Coast Demerara with a triple-header card set for Sunday.Originally, the quarter-final playoff was set to start last Sunday at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) facility, but according to coordinator Lennox Arthur, because of the inclement weather, coupled with the staging of another competition that was being conducted the same day in the city, a new venue and date for the start of the quarter-final action had to be decided on.
So, come Sunday, beginning at 21:00hrs, Ann’s Grove will take on Cougars in the first of four quarter-final matches.
Two supporting games are also on the cards for Sunday, with the two winners advancing to the quarter-final round.
From 17:00hrs, Camptown will engage Uitvlugt, while from 19:00hrs, Riddim Squad face Eagles of Linden.
The competition will continue tomorrow with more quarter-final action, this time at the GFC ground.
In the opening game from 17:00hrs, Police face Pouderoyen and from 19:00hrs Santos play Beavers, while from 21:00hrs Western Tigers tackle Den Amstel.
Two days later (Sunday), more quarter-final action is scheduled for the GFC venue where from 16:00hrs the winner of the Santos versus Beavers encounter will oppose the winner of the Police versus Pouderoyen affair. At 18:00hrs, Federal Winners Connection come up against the winner of the Riddim Squad versus Eagles encounter.
The feature game on Sunday will bring together the winner of the Western Tigers versus the winner of the Camptown versus Uitvlugt match.
At stake in the tournament is the top prize of $700 000 and the Aruwai Resort trophy.
The other top three teams in the competition will receive $300 000 and the Ansa McAl trophy (2nd place), $200 000 and the John Fernandes Limited trophy (3rd place) and $100 000 and the Minister of State trophy (4th place).
