The Guyana Police Force (GPF) is warning members of the public that acts of violence, destruction of property, deliberate obstruction of public roads, threats against individuals, and the incitement or organisation of such activities will be dealt with firmly and in accordance with the law.

The Force recognises and respects the constitutional rights of citizens to freedom of expression and peaceful picketing. However, these rights must be exercised within the confines of the law and do not extend to acts of violence, intimidation, sabotage or other unlawful conduct that endangers public safety.

Persons found engaging in such activities will be investigated and, where sufficient evidence exists, prosecuted in accordance with the law.

The GPF further reminds the public that the Public Order Act, Chapter 16:03, regulates public meetings and processions. Organisers of public processions are required to obtain the necessary permission and comply with the conditions imposed under the Act.

Of particular concern are acts intended to create widespread fear, threaten national security or disrupt services essential to the community.

Members of the public are further reminded that, under Section 309A of the Criminal Law (Offences) Act, Chapter 8:01, certain acts involving violence, serious destruction of property or disruption of essential services may constitute terrorism where the specific conduct and intention required by law are established.

Attempts, incitement and assistance in the commission of such acts may also attract criminal liability where the evidence establishes the necessary legal elements of an offence.

The Guyana Police Force makes it clear that terrorism charges will be pursued where investigations reveal evidence satisfying the legal requirements of such offences.

The Force remains committed to protecting the constitutional rights of all citizens while maintaining public safety, preserving law and order, and safeguarding national security.

Members of the public are urged to exercise their rights peacefully and responsibly, refrain from violence or unlawful activities, and respect the rights and safety of others.
