FIRST it was the national rifle team who started the victory reign, followed by the national Sevens Rugby, cricket and karate teams who all won Regional honours for their country in championships held this year. The national squash team tried their very best to emulate the above mentioned teams, but fell short and had to settle for sixth place when the curtains came down on the 2010 Senior Caribbean Squash Championships on Saturday which was held in St Vincent.
Guyana wrapped up its participation in the team events with the men’s team competing against Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) in the fifth and sixth place playoff and lacking one player in their line up, started the match with a loss to their name.
Such a position meant that Guyana had to win three of the remaining four matches, but only managed to record two victories, thanks to Robert Mc David who beat Mandela Patrick 11-7, 11- 6, 11- 2 and Richard Chin who beat full time professional player, Colin Ramasran in his toughest match to date.
Ramasran won the first two games and looked like he was about to pull off a major upset before falling victim to Chin’s game of attrition.
Chin won the next three games to pull out the win 8-11, 7-11, 11-4, 11-6 and 11-3, but his other two teammates namely Alex Arjoon who lost to Kale Wilson 7-11, 11-13 and 8-11 and Julian Chin who went under to Ryan Abraham 3-11, 11-9, 9-11 and 8-11, were not so fortunate.
The three person Veterans team played their final two matches last Friday, where they started same 0-2 and eventually lost out to the OECS team 1-4.
Brendon Mounter and Pat Mounter went under to Paul Cryus and Vonnie Router by 3-0 margins, while Alwyn Callender defeated Mark Chapman 3-1.
In the second veteran’s match of the same day, T&T made a clean sweep over Guyana , romping away with a 5-0 victory.
Mounter, who has been carrying a slight injury for the entire event lost to Diane Julien 3-0 before he was forced to retire hurt in his matchup against Mark Laughlin when he was trailing his opponent 2-1, while Callender was defeated by John Holley 3-0 and Pat Mounter lost to Diane Julien 3-0.
The championships which is usually played over a 10 day period but was shortened to seven days due to budgetary restrictions, ended yesterday with Guyana enjoying the much deserved day off after an unusually amount of squash in a short period of time.
