Windies women’s coach upbeat after reaching semis

BASSETERRE, St Kitts (CMC) – An elated West Indies women’s coach Sherwin Campbell said yesterday his side remained confident they could win the World Twenty20 Championship, after dumping England from the tournament in an exciting finish at Warner Park. “As a team, we are exactly where we planned to be at this stage in the tournament and we are in the right frame of mind to move on and win the tournament,” the former West Indies vice-captain said.
“Before the tournament, during the training camp I told the team that we would need to win five matches to win the tournament. We have already won two and we will be trying to win the other three.
“That would mean beating Australia in the next match, after that winning the semi-final in St Lucia and winning the big final in Barbados on May 16.”
The Windies bowlers performed superbly to restrict the title-holders after they could only post 122 for eight after being sent in.
Behind outstanding performances from off-spinner Anisa Mohammed (2-9) and medium pacer Shemaine Campbelle (2-15), England crashed from 65 without loss to 120 for nine to lose by two runs.
“It was a magical bowling performance from Anisa. She came in at a crucial stage of the innings with England sailing along at 60 without loss and literally won the game for us,” Campbell said.
“She bowled well in partnership with Shemaine and they did what was required at that time.”
West Indies face Australia in their final preliminary round, Group A game tomorrow before heading to St Lucia for the semi-finals.
