Kite shopping frenzy in the city yesterday

YESTERDAY scores of parents with their children went kite shopping and the atmosphere in downtown Georgetown was a busy one as kite vendors called out to passers-by to make a purchase of a kite of their choice.
The pavements of Regent Street were lined with a kaleidoscope of colours of kites in various shapes and sizes, making it difficult for children to make a choice.
There were kites made of paper and plastic which ranged from $400 to $2,500 each depending on the size. With the purchase of a kite you were also entitled to a reel of twine.
Vendors yesterday told the Guyana Chronicle that this year shopping has picked up quite a bit and the kites are selling out fast. They said as the years go by more people are buying kites rather than the old fashioned way of making kites for their children.
The vendors added that they have spent a lot of time making kites for the season and hope that all would be sold.
Shoppers were also selecting clothes to be worn on Easter Monday when they take to the seawall, Hope Beach and other venues to fly their kites with their families.
