In Region Two…
A CONTRACTOR in Region Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam), Mr. Emile Isaacs has promised residents and officials of the Regional Administration that he will rectify defective construction work on the $700,000 stelling and walkway at Jacklow Primary School, Upper Pomeroon River.
It was reported that the 84 feet wooden stelling and 40 feet concrete walkway were recently completed under the Education Ministry School Improvement Grant Programme.
But, when the structures were handed over, members of the Parent Teachers Association (PTA) and the Headmistress, Mrs. Judy Sandy, criticised the completion as sloppy and complained to the regional authorities.
Consequently, at a meeting on Wednesday, attended by members of the PTA, Regional Vice-Chairman, Mr. Vishnu Samaroo, senior officers of the Education Department, Isaacs and Mr. Anthony Hunte, Community Involvement Specialist for EFA-FIT (Education for All- Fast Track Initiative), it was agreed that the erections will be dismantled and posts on which the stelling rested will be re-aligned so that its new height will be higher than the highest tide.
It was also decided that the stelling will be rebuilt with either greenheart or mora woods and the decking with two-inch planks, at no additional cost.
In addition, two residents from the community will be employed on the job to oversee that it is being done according to what the PTA wants.
Samaroo said he is pleased that Isaacs acknowledged the faults and is willing to rectify them free of additional cost to the school.
Although the project was not awarded under the Region’s capital programme, engineers from the Regional Administration will also monitor the reconstruction that is expected to begin after Easter Monday.
