Successful maternal, child health efforts rewarded

THOSE responsible have been rewarded for their successful efforts in the areas of maternal and child health as well as the expanded programme on immunisation (EPI).
The health workers, Regional Health Officers
(RHOs) and other stakeholders in the sector gathered at Regency Suites Hotel, on Hadfield Street, Georgetown, on Tuesday for the awards ceremony.
Director of the Maternal and Child Care Unit of the Health Ministry, Dr Janice Woolford said health workers have contributed significantly and have done exceptionally well.
Among others, the Regional Health Authority (RHA) in Region Six (East Berbice/ Corentyne) was recognised for the best maternal and child health programme.
Region Seven (Cuyuni/Mazaruni) was awarded for the best EPI programme, also with a Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) prize.
The best health worker in the area of maternal and child health for 2009 was from Region Seven, too, in the person of registered nurse/midwife Corina Williams.
For maintaining good surveillance, Region Five (Mahaica/Berbice) beat the other regions and copped the prize.
Several Regions were also given recognition for the vaccination programmes in the regions, more particularly, for coverage of more than 90 per cent.
They include Regions Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam), Three (West Demerara/Essequibo Islands), Five, Six and Seven.
Woolford also identified Region One (Barima/Waini) but it was not an awardee because their data was not submitted in time to be considered.
She pointed out, though, that the Region One vaccination coverage is more than 90 per cent.
