BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC) – Out-of-favour West Indies batsman Ryan Hinds played the ultimate captain’s knock as Barbados put Trinidad and Tobago to the sword on the second day of their WICB regional first class match at Kensington Oval yesterday.
The 28-year-old left-hander ended the day on a chanceless 111 not out as the home team closed on 327 for six, an overall lead of 56 and first innings points.
They batted all day after Trinidad and Tobago declared at their overnight score of 271 for nine. The decision to declare was taken after last man Ravi Rampaul was unable to take the field due to illness.
Hinds, in his 11th season at first-class level, was at his best as he recorded his 11th first class century and third against T&T. He came to the crease with the score at 116 for two after Dale Richards (38) and Kirk Edwards (24) had laid a platform.
He then took over adding 39 for the third wicket with opener and former captain Jason Haynes who made an accomplished 61 with five boundaries in close to three hours at the crease.
In a bullish mood at the start of his innings, Hinds gradually slowed as he dominated the bowlers and reached his half-century off just 70 balls in 71 minutes with five fours and a six.
He remained entrenched and his century came late in the evening off 157 balls, including 12 boundaries and a six. After reaching the landmark he chose not to go into attack mode, but rather to cautiously see out the evening. Overall he has so far batted for 3¾ hours and faced 182 balls.
Hinds shared 102 for the fourth wicket with Kevin Stoute who played a cameo of 46 off 61 balls in an hour of breathtaking entertainment.
The 24-year-old all-rounder gave an exhibition of clean hitting and silky-smooth strokes along the carpet, scorching two fours and two sixes – one an effortless straight hit off leg-spinner Imran Khan (3-45) which was deposited into the 3Ws Stand.
He looked set for a half-century but in trying to attack off-spinner Amit Jaggernauth (3-99) offered a simple return catch.
Dwayne Smith was greeted with a standing ovation by the fans in the Greenidge & Haynes Stand but hopes of a sparkling innings were dashed when he perished for 12 to a catch at deep mid-wicket off Jaggernauth.
Hinds then posted another 54 for the sixth wicket with wicketkeeper Patrick Browne who eventually gifted his wicket, caught at mid-on for 25 trying to lift a ball out of the ground with 10 minutes left in the day’s play.
Earlier, Richards and Haynes added an attractive 70 for the first wicket to give Barbados a sound start before the former was bowled by Jaggernauth.
Any dreams T&T had of making inroads were then crushed as Edwards joined Haynes to add a further 46 for the second wicket and take Barbados to lunch at 97 for one.
