- Bacchus X1 stun defending champions Supreme Stars
A NEW women’s champion will be crowned tomorrow when the ninth edition of the Prime Minister’s T20 Softball Cup, organised by the Georgetown Softball Cricket League (GSCL), in conjunction with the Office of the Prime Minister, climaxes at the Police Sports Club ground, Eve Leary.
In a stunning upset on Friday’s opening day, newcomers Bacchus X1, hailing from the West Demerara area, sent 2024 champions, Linden’s Supreme Stars, packing in one of two semi-finals played at the Guyana National Industrial Corporation ground on Woolford Avenue, Georgetown, winning by six wickets in an exciting encounter.
Former two-time champions, 4R Lioness, ensured there were no further jitters in the other semi-final, played at the Muslim Youth Organisation (MYO) ground, also on Woolford Avenue, winning by 37 runs from upstarts, Name Brand/Corriverton, who also threatened at one stage to engineer another upset but their inexperience came to the fore as four of their players were needlessly run out.
Winning the toss, and opting to take first strike, Supreme Stars could only muster 121 for nine in their allotted 15 overs with the principal scorers being Kelsey Couchman (30) and Traceian Hartman 28. There were two wickets each for Krystal Sampson and Delli Khan.
Khan returned to hit a top score of 29 while Jenny Zainool supported with 21 as Bacchus X1 huffed and puffed their way to 122 for six with two overs remaining amongst wild celebrations.
The other semi-final saw 4R Lioness reaching what seemed an inadequate 138 for seven in 15 overs with Linda Stephens leading the way with 21. Brenesha Fredericks took two for 22.
In reply, Name Brand/Corriverton were restricted to 99 for eight in their allotted 15 overs, their running the wicket leaving much to be desired. Latoya Willians grabbed three for 23.
The first-round matches saw 4R Lioness winning from Essequibo’s Invaders by 42 runs, with National player Cherry-Ann Fraser leading the way for the winners with an attractive 43, which included three fours and three sixes, Stephens supported with 34,
Supreme Stars defeated Name Brand/Corriverton by 43 runs and Bacchus X1 won from Circuitville.
Meanwhile, the three men’s categories – Open All Class, Masters Over-50 and Legends Over-50 – were set to bowl off yesterday at various venues around Georgetown and East Coast with the semi-finals slated to be staged Saturday afternoon.
