GUYANA’S Sachia Vickery earned a hard-fought place in the semifinals of the women’s singles category of the South American Games in Santa Fe, Argentina.

She faced a stern challenge from Chile’s Antonia Vergara in the quarter finals.

In a gruelling 2 hours and a half match, Vickery came out hot, claiming the first set 6-2, but a spirited run from Vergara saw her fighting back valiantly to even the contest 1-1 by clinching the second set 6-3.

In the third set, it was a see-saw battle, as Vickery who had a career high ranking of 73, showed her quality against Vergara, who is currently ranked 388.

Vickery, currently ranked 688, pulled out all the stops to close it out 6-4 with some powerful stroke play.

On Wednesday she came up against Leyla Britez of Paraguay; she easily disposed of her opponent in 6-3, 6-3 to earn a place in the semis.

She will now await her next opponent in the semifinals today.
Meanwhile, in table tennis, the Guyana men’s team battled the host, Argentina, losing 8-0.

Colin Wong and Shemar Britton lost in the men’s doubles to Horacio Cifuentes and Santiago Lorenzo.

Britton and Elishaba Johnson lost their singles matches 2-0 each.
They will meet Ecuador in the third clash in group B later today, looking for a win.
