– six arrested for alleged harbouring

POLICE have recaptured a fugitive from New Amsterdam Prison, and detained six other people on suspicion of helping him evade capture, in an operation that highlights the role of community networks in cases of escape from custody.
Budnarine Persaud, 28, a fisherman of Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice, was found hiding in the bow of a fishing vessel at No. 65 Fisheries, Corentyne, at about 03:30hrs on Wednesday, September 23, 2026. Police said they acted on information received.
Persaud was taken to the Springlands Police Station and placed in custody pending an investigation into his escape from lawful custody. Four men and two women were also arrested in connection with the alleged harbouring of the escapee. They were likewise taken to the Springlands Police Station and detained. Investigations are continuing.
The Guyana Prison Service commended members of the public and the Guyana Police Force for their timely assistance in recapturing prisoner Budnarine Persaud.
