THE Ministry of Natural Resources, through the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC), is continuing to provide direct technical assistance to miners in Region Seven, promoting mercury-free technologies, improved gold recovery and safer mining practices.
The initiative, known as Technical Assistance to Miners (TAMs), is being implemented by the GGMC’s Environmental Division and Mineral Processing Department in collaboration with the Guyana Mining School and Training Centre Inc. (GMSTCI), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) through its Mainstreaming Biodiversity in Mining (MBIM) Project, and the Guyana Forestry Commission (GFC).
As part of the ongoing outreach programme, technical teams recently visited the mining communities of Issano and Kangaruma, where they engaged miners on practical methods aimed at improving efficiency and reducing the environmental impact of small- and medium-scale mining operations.
Among the key areas addressed were mercury-free alternatives, techniques to improve gold recovery and reduce gold losses, and safer, more environmentally responsible mining practices.
The outreach forms part of the Ministry of Natural Resources’ wider efforts to strengthen technical support within the mining sector while encouraging miners to adopt methods that minimise environmental and health risks.
Through the TAMs initiative, the ministry and GGMC are seeking to improve mineral recovery and promote more responsible mining practices across Guyana’s mining communities.
The programme continues to be rolled out across mining communities and sites in Region Seven as authorities work with stakeholders to strengthen the sustainability and efficiency of the sector.
