– Essequibo Classic set for Next Month
THE Guyana Olympic Association recently made a sizable contribution to the country’s travel and other expenses for the Central America and Caribbean championship in Guatemala.
Nine bodybuilders are confirmed to represent Guyana at the championships with the team set to leave Guyana tomorrow (Thursday, August 27) for the competition.
At the 2025 CAC championship held in St. Lucia, Guyana racked up 12 medals, with gold from Lindon Burnett, Rawle Greene, and Romelton Siland.
Meanwhile when the team returns, they will hit the ground running next month, on September 26th, with the inaugural staging of the Essequibo Classic Bodybuilding Competition set for the Anna Regina Secondary Schools auditorium.
GBBFF’s Videsh Sookram says this first event is years in the making.
‘It is important to hold a competition in Essequibo because it is our aim as the new federation to have bodybuilding all over our country, and by enlightening the whole country about the sport, we will get the best talent to represent our country and keep putting Guyana on the world map. Why I say keep putting is because we are already there; we have Rosanna Fung, who is now ranked number 1 on the IFBB wellness roster; she is number 1. We have Nicholas Albert, who just qualified for the Olympian top 5 in the competition.
Sookram says they will conduct an outreach before to engaging sponsors and athletes ahead of the bodybuilding showcase.
GBBFF acting president Sookram says they are working along with officials from the Ministry of Culture, Youth, and Sport; the Tourism Ministry; and the regional executive in the county to pull off the event.
He said they are also taking some of the top national athletes to give the region a fabulous show.
‘We are out to get the best talent from all the regions, so by hosting a competition in Essequibo, we will be taking some of our veterans to Essequibo to compete and to have the best athletes from Essequibo take part.’
He said they expect to see the best regional talents coming out of the region’s 7-8 gyms.
The event will crown Mr. and Ms. Essequibo and a champion for the Essequibo Classic.
The classics are the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, Fitness Express, and Viyas Enterprise.
