PRESIDENT Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali will lead a “Presidential Outreach” comprising ministers and senior officials and technical officers to Region One (Barima-Waini) today.
The President is expected to be in the Moruca, Matarkai and Mabaruma sub-regions.
The initiative, organised in collaboration with the Barima-Waini Regional Democratic Council, is open to all residents. The day will begin at 9:00 a.m. in Moruca, where the President will meet residents at the Santa Rosa Secondary School.
From there, the outreach moves to Matarkai, where residents of Pakera, Minab, Heaven Hill, Hell Hill and Flats will gather at the Skill Training Centre in Matthews Ridge.
The final engagement takes place on the lawns of the Regional Democratic Council building in Mabaruma, where residents of Hosororo, Kamaka, Broomes Estate, and the Mabaruma Compound and Township are expected to turn out.
The visit comes as the government points to a wide-ranging development push in Barima-Waini over the past five years, spanning infrastructure, energy, education, water and agriculture.
On infrastructure, the Ministry of Public Works’ Hinterland Roads Programme has poured hundreds of millions of dollars into road rehabilitation across the region.
Energy access has also seen significant gains, with two new generators installed — one in Mabaruma and one in Matthews Ridge — extending 24-hour electricity to those communities.
Every village in the region is now connected to the internet, and residents can pursue certificates, diplomas and degrees remotely through the Guyana Online Academy of Learning (GOAL), bringing tertiary education within reach of communities that once had none.
Efforts are also under way to improve water access and agricultural capacity, with plans for 17 new wells aimed at achieving universal access to potable water, along with support for farmers through equipment, drainage improvements and efforts to revitalise the region’s cocoa and coffee industries.
These are among the many other economic and social welfare projects ongoing across the region.
