A 20-year-old policeman has been remanded to prison after being charged with the murder of his Cuban girlfriend, whose body was discovered in the Enmore South Backdam following an intensive police investigation.

Randy Thomas of Mahaica, East Coast Demerara, appeared before Magistrate Teriq Mohamed at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court on Monday, where the indictable charge of murder was read to him.

The charge alleges that Thomas murdered 26-year-old Dailen Paneque Gomes, a Cuban national of Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara, sometime between June 18 and June 24, 2026, at Enmore South, East Coast Demerara.

Thomas was not required to plead to the indictable offence and was remanded to prison.

The matter was adjourned to July 21, 2026.

The charge follows an investigation into the disappearance of Gomes, who was reported missing after failing to return home from work.

Police have since alleged that Thomas confessed to the killing and led investigators to the woman’s body in the Enmore Backdam.

Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum had said investigators were told that Thomas used a teddy bear to muffle the fatal gunshot before concealing the body and disposing of several pieces of evidence.
