Two arrested after armed robbery reported in Parika – cash recovered

POLICE have arrested two suspects and recovered more than $124,000 in cash as investigations continue into an alleged armed robbery committed against a 21-year-old engineer at Parika, East Bank Essequibo, on Tuesday night.
According to police, the robbery occurred at about 23:30 hours in the vicinity of the Big Kiss Parking Lot, where the Wakenaam Island resident was reportedly attacked and relieved of cash and personal property by two men.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the victim was walking south when an identifiable male allegedly approached him, pointed what appeared to be a firearm in his direction and began searching his pockets.
Police said a second identifiable male then approached from behind and allegedly placed the victim in a chokehold while the first suspect reportedly stole $200,000 in cash and a Samsung S22 cellular phone.
The suspects subsequently fled the scene in a black Toyota Fielder wagon, travelling eastward, investigators said.
The victim later reported the incident to the Parika Police Station, prompting an immediate investigation.
Acting on information received, police intercepted a black Toyota Fielder wagon believed to be linked to the robbery. During a search of the vehicle’s 30-year-old driver, officers recovered $59,060 in cash.
Further intelligence led investigators to a 17-year-old labourer from Stewartville, West Coast Demerara, who was arrested and taken to the Leonora Police Station. A search conducted on the teenager resulted in the discovery of $65,000 in cash, police reported.
The vehicle and the cash recovered from both suspects have since been lodged as evidence pending further investigations.
The two suspects remain in police custody as detectives continue their inquiries into the matter. Police have not disclosed whether the stolen cellular phone has been recovered.
Investigations are ongoing.
