Lethem firefighter fined $150,000 for multiple traffic offences

A firefighter attached to the Lethem Fire Station has been fined a total of $150,000 after pleading guilty to four traffic-related offences committed in Central Rupununi.

Thiago Rebeiro, 34, of Tabatinga, Central Rupununi, appeared before Magistrate Omadatt Chandan at the Lethem Magistrate’s Court on Monday, June 1, 2026.

He was charged with Refusal to Consent to Taking a Breathalyser Test, Unlicensed Driver, Breach of Insurance and Dangerous Driving.

The offences were committed on May 29, 2026, on Tabatinga Public Road, Central Lethem.

Rebeiro pleaded guilty to all four charges.

For refusing to consent to a breathalyser test, he was fined $25,000 or, in default, two weeks’ imprisonment.

He was also fined $25,000 or two weeks’ imprisonment for driving without a licence and a further $25,000 or two weeks’ imprisonment for breach of insurance.

On the charge of dangerous driving, Rebeiro was fined $75,000 or, in default, seven weeks’ imprisonment.

The court imposed a total fine of $150,000 or, in default, 13 weeks’ imprisonment.
