The bodies of a pregnant woman and her fiancé, who were swept away by strong waves while swimming at Unity Beach, East Coast Demerara, on Sunday afternoon, were recovered at sea on Tuesday morning.
The recovery was made by members of a search party after two days of intensive efforts. Family members have since been informed.
The deceased have been identified as 20-year-old Loydicia Waldron, known as “Loyda”, a sales assistant of Victoria Village, East Coast Demerara, and her fiancé, 31-year-old Special Constable Andri Francis, called “Bobby”, also of Victoria Village.
According to earlier information from the Guyana Police Force, the couple encountered difficulties while swimming at Unity Beach at about 14:00 hrs on Sunday.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Waldron reportedly began drifting further out into the Atlantic Ocean and called out for help. Francis reportedly attempted to rescue her, but both were overpowered by the strong current and disappeared beneath the water.
An alarm was immediately raised and searches were conducted along the beach and surrounding areas. However, initial efforts to locate the couple proved unsuccessful.
The tragic incident has left relatives, friends and members of the Victoria community in mourning.
Waldron was expecting a child with Francis and had been eagerly preparing for her baby shower, which was scheduled for July 25.
Police investigations are continuing.
