THE Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) continues to transform the healthcare experience in Guyana through the implementation of its Electronic Health Records (EHR) system, a major step towards improving efficiency, accessibility, and continuity of care for patients across the country.
Over the past several months, the EHR system has been steadily changing how healthcare is delivered and received, allowing medical personnel to access patient information more quickly and accurately, while reducing many of the challenges traditionally associated with paper-based records.
Patients at the Festival City Polyclinic have already begun sharing positive feedback about the system and its impact on their healthcare journey.
Ms Desiree Pestano, who has been attending the clinic for approximately 20 years, described her experience as smooth and reassuring.
“I am a diabetic [and hypertensive], so I would normally come every three months to check with the doctor,” she explained.
“Since this new programme started, I haven’t had a problem.”
She noted that one of the most comforting aspects of the system is the accessibility of her medical information, even when physical documents may not be immediately available.
“I was pleased that even if you lose a card… they have my information in the computer,” she shared.
The long-time patient also praised the level of service she continues to receive at the clinic, describing it as “very, very good” and encouraged others who may be uncertain about the digital system to embrace the change.
GPHC views the implementation of the EHR system as more than just a technological upgrade. It represents a broader commitment to modernising healthcare delivery, strengthening patient confidence, and ensuring that medical professionals have timely access to critical patient information to support safer, more effective care.
As the institution continues to expand the initiative, preparations are underway to implement the EHR system at the Urgent Care Centre, formerly known as the Medical Outpatient Department (MOPD).
This next phase marks another significant milestone in the GPHC’s digital-transformation journey and reinforces the institution’s commitment to providing the highest standard of tertiary healthcare for the people of Guyana. (GPHC)
