IN less than three months of opening its doors, the five new regional hospitals have processed some 25,000 patients, delivered 220 babies, and conducted just about 100 surgeries.

This was on Thursday disclosed by President Dr. Irfaan Ali, who during the commissioning of the No. 75 Village Regional Hospital, told residents and stakeholders that the government is rewriting the map of healthcare across the country.

This hospital is the sixth new health facility delivered under the Government of Guyana’s wider programme to modernise healthcare. The other hospitals are located at Diamond and Enmore (Region Four), Bath (Region five) De Kinderen (Region Three), and Lima Sands (Region Two).

“Today, we celebrate extraordinary accomplishments, but just to give you an idea in less than three months, the five other regional hospitals that we have opened processed, or would have already seen, 25,000 patients,” he said.

“For those who question the investment, for those who question the accomplishment, there is your answer,” the President affirmed.

The new facilities combined have brought on stream 18 new state-of-the-art operating theatres offering advanced medical care. They are fully equipped to offer services associated with internal medicine and surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, cardiology, mental health and psychiatry, orthopaedics surgery and inpatient and outpatient care. Also being offered are advanced laboratory and imaging services, as well as dental and optical care.

“We are closing critical gaps in our health care system. We’re ensuring that access to quality health care is not a distant hope reached only after long journeys, but a living reality right here in our communities.”
