– says Guyana’s healthcare system is on the brink of transformation

GUYANA is preparing to take a groundbreaking step in advancing its health sector with the introduction of robotic surgeries, a move aimed at modernising healthcare delivery and utilising cutting-edge technology.

This was announced by His Excellency, President Dr. Irfaan Ali, during last Friday’s commissioning of the new $6.6 billion Lima Regional Hospital in Region Two.

President Ali highlighted that robotic-assisted surgeries will not only transform the way medical care is delivered in Guyana, but the connectivity between local doctors and international specialists will be strengthened.

“There is no shortcut. We have to get there as early as tomorrow, not in 10 years,” President Ali emphasised.

He noted that the government’s vision is to create a healthcare system that is world-class, where doctors and nurses work in state-of-the-art environments supported by advanced technologies.

The President emphasised that the People’s Progressive Party/Civic Government is committed to making this happen.

Looking ahead, President Ali urged medical professionals to take full advantage of training opportunities over the next three years, as Guyana prepares for a more specialised and technologically driven healthcare system.

“Those in the system use the next three years to upgrade yourself. Use all the training opportunities we are giving you. Nurses, know that this country is on 24-hour call for you, “the President stated.

President Ali further underscored the importance of investing in people, not just infrastructure.

He announced plans to expand training for nurses and doctors while ensuring supportive facilities such as day and night care services at hospitals, so healthcare workers can have peace of mind knowing their children are safe while they serve the public.

He stressed that Guyana’s growing revenues must translate into an uplifted quality of life for its people, ensuring dignity, better welfare, and opportunities for those who once migrated to return home to work.

“The hospital is not just a physical structure—it is about the people and the support staff. That is why we are investing heavily in training,” President Ali said.

The introduction of robotic surgeries will transform Guyana’s health sector signalling the country’s commitment to placing people at the centre of development while embracing technology for a healthier future.

Residents welcomed the announcement saying that it is a reflection of visionary leadership and care for the people.

“President Irfaan Ali is a man with a vision, and we know when he say something he do it; at Lima we are happy for the hospital” a resident said.

Residents are very thankful for Lima Regional Hospital which will provide specialised services to the Region Two population.
