THE development of the Guyana/China Friendship Park, located on the western side of the new Demerara Harbour Bridge, is well underway with several major components already completed. The project, which is being overseen by the Protected Areas Commission (PAC), aims to provide a state-of-the-art recreational space for all Guyanese and strengthen bilateral ties between Guyana and China.
Chairman of the PAC Board of Directors, Robert Persaud, has confirmed that significant progress has been made, particularly in terms of infrastructure and landscaping. Key earthworks, including all excavation activities for ditches related to electrical and water piping, have been successfully completed. These systems have now been installed across the site.
The first batch of plants has been planted around Friendship Square, adding vibrant greenery to the area. Major structural features, such as the lakeside block platforms and the waterside steps—described as a bridge-like structure—have also been completed, adding to the park’s aesthetic and functional appeal.
Ongoing works include landscape revetment and the construction of a landscape wall, which will prominently feature the park’s logo. Additionally, installation of water supply and drainage systems at the children’s activity area is currently in progress.
According to Persaud, foundation works have already been laid for the remaining structures, which include restrooms, guard rooms, grandstands, pavilions, and corridors. The next phase will also see the planting of the second batch of plants on the southern side of the site.
Once completed, the Guyana/China Friendship Park will offer a wide range of facilities, including a tennis court, football field, picnic areas, walking trails, and relaxation zones tailored for families. The initiative is part of the government’s broader vision to enhance green spaces and promote public health, wellness, and longevity.
“The development of this park is not just a physical transformation of space, but a tangible step toward improving the quality of life for Guyanese,” Persaud stated.
The project stands as a symbol of continued friendship and co-operation between Guyana and China, while serving the long-term goal of sustainable community development.
