RIYAD Latif, the promising leg-spinning all-rounder, is a fresh face among the Guyana Rainforest Rangers’ seven protected players for the inaugural West Indies Breakout T20 League.
The 17-year-old Latif’s selection adheres to the league’s mandate that each franchise must include a leg-spinner, emphasising the importance of this skillset in the T20 format.
Cricket West Indies (CWI) confirmed the protected lists for all six franchises on Tuesday, outlining the rules governing the selection process. Each team could protect seven players, with a maximum of three between 27 and 29.
The remaining seven squad members, all 26 or younger, will be chosen in the upcoming draft.

The Rangers’ protected list also features Nial Smith (29), Kemol Savory (28), Ronaldo Alimohamed (26), Kevin Sinclair (25), and Ashmead Nedd (24).
The Breakout T20 League, designed to showcase emerging Caribbean talent, will run from April 25 to May 10, 2025, with all 17 matches played at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Trinidad.
To maintain the league’s focus on developing young cricketers, players must have limited professional experience: fewer than 40 List A T20 matches and fewer than 10 international T20s.

The league features teams representing the six CWI territorial boards: Barbados Pelicans, Guyana Rainforest Rangers, Jamaica Titans, Leeward Islands Thunder, Trinidad & Tobago Legions, and Windward Islands Infernos.
Each team is affiliated with a Caribbean Premier League (CPL) franchise, which provides a pathway for players to progress in their careers.
