AS part of the Region Eight Circuit Development Project, the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA) continues to identify each community’s Unique Selling Point (USP) through community engagement and attraction/product assessment.
According to the GTA, recently, an assessment led by Clyde Edwards highlighted Tuseneng’s potential tourism attractions through a tourism awareness workshop.
The village which was formally known as “Sak Walatoi,” is a destination with the potential to attract a large cultural traveller following.
The GTA highlighted that some potential activities include Parakari and Casiri-making and sampling experiences, the bull-horn-blowing competition, and tangerine picking at Uncle Luke’s.
The GTA said it remains committed to providing technical guidance and support in 2025 to ensure the village channels its resources towards tourism development for shared community benefit.
Guyana’s tourism sector, like the oil and gas sector, is one of the rapidly growing sectors contributing to Guyana’s evolving economy.
Earlier this year, Tourism Minister, Oneidge Walrond stated that the revenue accumulated by the sector in 2024 was approximately $13.6 billion.
Further, the minister highlighted the private sector’s increased confidence in tourism investments.
It was pointed out that tourism does not just apply to the hotels and city, but to the communities like Tuseneng whose tourism offerings can be built on.
Recently, President Dr. Irfaan Ali announced that the government is focused on training nearly 10,000 locals in the tourism sector. These individuals will be trained in areas such as wilderness and nature-based tourism, training as first responders and as tour guides. This will aid in improving the quality of tourism services that the country will offer.
In 2024, the GTA trained more than 2,000 persons.
