POLICE are investigating a fight that occurred outside a Superbet outlet at Leonora, West Coast Demerara (WCD), on the evening of January 24. The fight, which involved several persons, first occurred inside the Superbet shop at about 20:15 hrs.
A police report indicated that 23-year-old Javier Kubair, a driver from Edinburgh, WCD, argued over the order in which to place bets with other customers. The report stated that Kubair attempted to purchase his bet before others who were ahead of him in line when an argument ensued between himself and 24-year-old Fazal Jabbar of Patentia, West Bank Demerara (WBD) and 42-year-old businessman Donia Alleyne of Anna Catherina, WCD, among others.
Matters took a turn for the worse when Kubair exited the shop, went to his parked car, armed himself with a cutlass, and returned to the Superbet outlet threatening and attacking other customers. The customers, in defence, armed themselves with stones and pieces of wood and threw them at Kubair. He retreated to the nearby District Sports Bar for safety.
The police were called and members of the Anti-Crime Patrol responded promptly.
Kubair, along with several others involved in the incident, was taken into custody and transported to the Leonora Police Station, where statements were recorded. Investigations continue.
