Dear Editor,
LIKE most Guyanese following current affairs, I, too, have caught wind of the recent utterances by the Mayor of Georgetown. This erupted from an incident involving the removal of illegal vendors impeding traffic opposite the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
From there on, His Worship swooped down and proceeded to put on quite the spectacle, including throwing himself underneath a truck. I fully understand the various displays of performative activism and stunts as elections loom. These are politicians we are dealing with, after all. What perturbed me were the putrid emanations from His Worship after that.
Our good Mayor Narine took it upon himself to spew a cacophony of accusations of what I can only describe as desperate, vile, wild and laden with divisive rhetoric.
Like a train running off its tracks, Mayor Narine started claiming that the President was discriminating against him due to his religion and expressing “concerns” that Guyana was becoming a “Muslim state”. From what orifice did he pull that?
As we progress in this land of ours, we must prevent the vipers of yesteryear from poisoning the fruit of tomorrow. We must not tolerate the seeds of discord being sown by any leader, regardless of their political affiliation. Most recently, we saw the justifiable recall of an ambassador for obscene remarks made towards a woman. To what accountability do we hold this elected Mayor of the Garden City? Is he beyond that? Most recently, the Mayor was on bail for gun charges. Now he is on tape spreading hate. Desperate attempts, and for what? Political relevance? This is not someone fit to hold the office of Mayor.
We are on the verge of a brighter tomorrow. Our potential is vast. Be careful with who we catapult on pedestals. For democracy dies in darkness.
Yours faithfully,
Nikhil Sankar.
