THE international community will be formally apprised of the veiled threat made to the GECOM Chair by Leader of the Opposition, Aubrey Norton.
Speaking at his weekly press conference two Tuesdays ago, Norton called for the resignation of GECOM Chairman, Justice (r’td), Claudette Singh, saying her failure to heed his call will see the Coalition taking appropriate actions.

The opposition leader had contended that the Coalition would not go into an election with Justice Singh as Chairman of GECOM and what he claims to be a bloated list of electors.
“And there are many things we can do to put the pressure on the elections commission and Claudette Singh. But we had first given her the opportunity to tender her resignation as a decent judge who would have served and to recognise that you cannot claim to be independent and, on every issue, you are voting with the People’s Progressive Party and you seem to have no interest in finding consensus on these issues. And so, we have left the door open. We hope we don’t have to close it and Claudette Singh will do the decent thing and resign,” he said.

Vice-President, Dr Bharrat Jagdeo at a press conference Friday last said Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Governance, Gail Teixeira will inform the international community of Norton’s threat.
“We will be writing. I’m going to ask Gail to write every international organisation exposing this threat by the Leader of the Opposition against the chair of GECOM. He is trying to intimidate her or get rid of her because she is impartial,” said Jagdeo.

“I’m shocked that civil society and the international community have not responded to this,” he added, pointing out that “I’ve seen the threat mirrored by many of the APNU supporters and leaders and I hope that from now on you will not treat his threats as inconsequential although he doesn’t generate issues of much weight and consequence but we must see an open condemnation across the country on this.”
