Two more crushing defeats end Bermuda’s miserable tour

KAMPALA, Uganda, (CMC) – Bermuda’s calamitous visit to East Africa came to an end on Monday with a second crushing defeat in two days that left them rooted to the bottom of the 50-over ICC Cricket World Cup Challenge League B standings.

Bermuda lost by 291 runs to unbeaten Jersey on Sunday and followed it up with a demoralising 10-wicket defeat against Italy, the second-worst side, on Monday.

Jersey left Bermuda with a daunting task after piling up 371 for eight, and although the captain Kamau Leverock, who promoted himself to opener, weighed in with 63, including six sixes and four fours, his side crumbled to 80 all out in 17.5 overs with Malachi Jones the next highest scorer with four not out.

Nick Greenwood’s century put the Channel Islanders in control and fellow opener Harrison Carlyon followed up his 73 by claiming five for 13 as Bermuda’s reply disintegrated.

There was little improvement on Monday when Bermuda were bowled out for 120 in 27.4 overs, Jones the top scorer with 21, before Italy’s opening pair, Marcus Campopiano (75 not out) and Nikolai Smith (49 not out), knocked off the runs in just 12.2 overs.

Bermuda’s inexperienced side had earlier lost heavily to Kenya, hosts Uganda, who ended the week still top of the standings, and Hong Kong.

Bermuda went into the Uganda leg of the tournament with one point gained from a no-result in an abandoned match against Kenya.

Hosts Uganda topped the table after the first leg, which was played in Oman in December 2019, with a perfect record of five victories.

The third and final leg of the group stage – part of the 2023 World Cup qualification process – will be played in Jersey in August.
