THE National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute (NAREI), last Friday, donated 100 18-month coconut plants to the Guyana Prison Service (GPS).

The plants were presented to Tiffany Trim, one of the officers attached to the agriculture department of GPS, by NAREI’s Daniel Chand at the Plant Nursery located at # 63 Village Corentyne, Berbice.

According to Trim, the plants will be cultivated by inmates under the supervision of officers at the various prison farms. The inmates usually tend to the various farms operated by the GPS. This offers them practical knowledge of farming. They are also exposed to theoretical lessons. Trim expressed gratitude to NAREI for the donation.

“We have developed a relationship with NAREI over a number of years…We knew that NAREI was the place to get quality coconut plants,” she said.

Chand said that the donation was part of NAREI’s social responsibility, and urged the Prison Service to make full use of the plants.
