PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC) – Host side Trinidad and Tobago edged out The Bahamas 1-0 in their League B match in the 2022/2023 CONCACAF Nations League on Monday to log their first victory dating back to the previous edition of the tournament.

In doing so, the Soca Warriors ended their Group C opponents’ five-match unbeaten run.

Trinidad and Tobago took the lead four minutes into the match at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain, thanks to a corner kick, as Neveal Hackshaw converted with a header off the service from Noah Powder.

Playing before a home crowd, they continued to stay aggressive in search of extending the lead with a strike from Duane Muckette that was denied by the woodwork in the 12th minute.

Hackshaw then got a chance on frame as he tried to secure a brace, but The Bahamas goalkeeper Julio Jemison kept the deficit to the minimum difference.

The home side continued with the same intensity in attack during the second half, and Levi Garcia had consecutive opportunities on target in the 48th, 49th, and 50th minutes, but the 1-0 scoreline remained intact.

Omari Bain had the best opportunities on the day for the visitors in the 63rd and 79th minutes, but Trinidad and Tobago goalkeeper Marvin Phillip would see out the clean sheet.

In the other Group C of League B match, St Vincent and the Grenadines played to a 2-2 draw at the Arnos Vale Stadium.

Azinho Solomon gave the home side the lead three minutes into the match on a well-executed counterattack that materialised into a left-footed lob past Nicaragua goalkeeper Alyer Lopez.

Cornelius Stwart nearly extended the advantage in the 21st minute with a menacing shot from long range that was denied by the far post.

Byron Bonilla got the equaliser for Nicaragua in the 22nd minute by recovering the ball off a back pass and using his head to push the ball into space and make it 1-1 on the scoreline.

Matias Moldskred Belli then handed the lead to the visitors in the 41st minute. With space just outside the box, the midfielder sent a left-footed laser into the bottom left corner to make it 2-1 for Nicaragua.

The home side were determined to get the draw before the break and a free kick from the right tied the encounter five minutes into first-half stoppage time as Solomon’s service connected with Oalex Anderson.

The second half proved to be much more defensive. Nicaragua pair Juan Barrera and Ariagner Smith were limited with both hitting off-target chances in the 52nd and 59th minutes, while Nazir McBurnette had the same luck for the hosts in the 65th minute.

Hosni Chandler looked to have the game-winner in sight as he drove into the box and hit a shot towards goal in the 82nd minute, but López stopped the attempt with his boots to keep the score level.

St Vincent and the Grenadines picked up their first point of their campaign and improved to 0-1-1. Nicaragua remain undefeated with a 1-1-0 record.
